Fire Extinguisher Requirements

An Individual performing monthly inspections are not required to be certified. Fire extinguishers shall be manually inspected when initially placed in service. Inspections should be performed on extinguishers 12 times per year, at least once per month.

Periodic inspections of fire extinguishers shall include a check of at least the following items:

Location in designated place
No obstruction to access or visibility
Pressure gauge reading or indicator in the operable range or position
Fullness determined by weighing or hefting
Condition of tires, wheels, carriage, hose, and nozzle for wheeled extinguishers
Indicator for non-rechargeable extinguishers using push to test pressure indicators

Where manual inspections are conducted, records for manual inspections shall be kept on a tag or a label attached to the fire extinguisher, on an inspection checklist maintained on file, or by an electronic method. The month and year the manual inspection was performed and the initials of the person performing the inspection shall be recorded. Records for manual inspection shall be kept to demonstrate that at least the last 12 monthly inspections have been performed.

Individuals performing maintenance & recharging of extinguishers shall be certified. Maintenance procedures shall include the procedures detailed in the manufacturer’s service manual and a thorough examination of the basic elements of the fire extinguisher including the following:

Mechanical parts of all fire extinguishers
Extinguishing agent
Expelling means
Physical condition

Each fire extinguisher shall have a tag or label securely attached that indicates that maintenance was performed. The tag or label as a minimum, shall identify the following:

Month and year of maintenance performed
Person performing the work
Name or the agency performing the work

In addition to the required tag or label, a permanent file record should be kept for each fire extinguisher. This file or record should include the following information, as applicable:

Maintenance date and the name of the person and agency performing the maintenance
Date of the last recharge and the name of the person and agency performing the recharge
Hydrostatic retest date and the name of the person and agency performing the hydrostatic test.
Description of dents remaining after passing of the hydrostatic test
Date of the 6 year maintenance for stored-pressure dry chemical & halogenated agent types

Pre Engineered Suppression Systems

Anyone in the restaurant business realizes the importance of a properly functioning kitchen hood suppression system. The liability alone makes this inspection a top priority.

PRE-ENGINEERED FIRE SUPPRESSION REQUIREMENTS

On a monthly basis, inspection shall be conducted in accordance with the manufacturer’s design, installation, and maintenance manual or owner’s manual.

At a minimum, the inspection shall include verification of the following:

The extinguishing system is in its proper location
The manual actuators are not obstructed
The tamper indicators and seals are intact
The maintenance tag or certificate is in place
No obvious physical damage or condition exist that might prevent operation
The pressure gauge(s), if provided, has been inspected physically or electronically to ensure it is in the operable range.
The nozzle blowoff caps, where provided, are intact and undamaged
The hazard has not changed, including replacement, modification, and relocation of protected equipment

Individual making inspections shall keep records for those extinguishing systems that were found to require corrective action. At least monthly, the date the inspection is performed and the initials of the person performing the inspection shall be recorded. The records shall be retained for the period between semiannual maintenance inspections.

A service technician who performs maintenance on an extinguishing system shall be trained and shall have passed a written or online test that is acceptable with the authority having jurisdiction.

At least semiannually and after any system activation, maintenance shall be conducted in accordance with the manufacturer’s design, installation, and maintenance manual.

Maintenance shall include the following:

A check to see the hazard has not changed
An examination of all detectors, the expellant gas container(s), the agent container(s), releasing devices, piping, hose assemblies, nozzles, signals, all auxiliary equipment, and the liquid level of all nonpressurized wet chemical containers
Verification that the agent distribution piping is not obstructed

Each wet chemical system shall have a tag or label securely attached, indicating the month and year the maintenance was performed and identifying the person performing the service. Only the current tag shall remain in place. A maintenance report, including all recommendations, shall be filed with the owner or with the owner’s representative. The owner or owner’s representative shall retain all maintenance reports for a period of 1 year after the next maintenance of that type required by the standard.
